The Local Small Business Coach PodcastEpisode 12 – Your People Are Your Greatest Asset

Episode 12 of the Local Small Business Coach

Welcome back to the Local Small Business Coach Podcast, I am your coach Tammy Adams.   Here is where we discuss your local small business and how you can increase your profits, boost your sales, improve your processes and develop stronger teams.

Here in episode 12 we are going to discuss how your people are your greatest asset

Today’s episode was inspired by a reminder from those I’ve worked with in the past that the key to any businesses success is their people.  So, how did this even come up?  We were actually talking about this podcast in a Facebook post. The group was primarily full of folks from my past, so in their world, they are surrounded by employees and teamwork.

They started talking about how I’ve always been a huge advocate of how your team is the key to your success.  How passionate they were that the employees were the key to its success.

I began to discuss how about half of the local small business owners do not have employees.  Then I had one of those ah ha moments. I realized that A) I had not done a people podcast yet even though they have been part of the general conversations we have been having, then B) over half of you do have teams and then I thought Even those of you without employees at some point will hire temporary help to be an extra set of hands on various jobs.

This ah ha moment made me realize that every single local small business owner is impacted by the topic of people. There is a reason one of our core 4 missions is to develop stronger teams.  I sometimes wonder if folks with no employees ever think about the impact of people on their business?  So if you are one of these solo businesses, please do not ever tune out of our podcast episodes on people.

More than likely you hire temp help at various times and if you ever have plans to expand your business, the odds are you will have a team at some point.  So you will need this information. These episodes will prepare you.

So, all of This lead to today’s topic of how your people are your greatest asset.

Throughout my career the one constant I always believed in was how my team was the most crucial thing I could take care of. I lucked out and learned this lesson very early. As I transitioned from large teams to my small team in my local business, this focus on having the strongest team, never changed.

It is easy for someone to brag about their superstar, few can brag about the entire team.  I use to tell folks their best person might be the greatest, but my entire team would wipe the floor with theirs. Team to team, I just knew I’d win hands down.

I could go on for days on your team but I promise not to do that to you today. I hope to break it down into smaller chunks so the nuggets can be grabbed and your personal ah ha moments can be implemented.

So, why do I think your team is your #1 asset? Plain and simple. They are the ones that are interacting with your customers and clients. They are the ones that are accomplishing each and every task. They are the ones that represent you and your brand!

The folks you accept to represent you speaks volumes to you as a leader. The behaviors you encourage and accept tells every customer or client what you stand for.

Think about any business that you have gone into and the people didn’t acknowledge you, or they didn’t care if you were there or not. What if you saw them taking to each other and not to you? What if they sneezed on your food or slopped stuff on your plate?  How about if their pants were hanging low or their shorts up their butt?

If your team goes into people homes, what if they cussed in someone’s home or knocked over stuff? What if they parked on their yard?  It is all these little things that speak volumes.

Now, what if you had a team that shouted hi! They were professional, they were trained, they cared and they treated your business as if it was their own? What if your people are what brought people into your business due to the experience people had?

Think about a business you love to take your family to since the people there are having fun and enjoying what they do? What if that was your team?

Another way to look at it is this. What if we took a look at how your team impacted your bottom line?

What do you think would happen to your sales if you had this crew that was fired up and having fun? Don’t you think it would encourange people to shop you more?

What do you think your bottom line would look like if you had employees that were stealing or not paying attention and destroying stuff.

Another crazy thought, what do you think happens to your sales and profits when you have a well trained team vs one that is figuring it out as they go?

How much do you think an employee who is well trained, loves what they do, and is passionate about your customers brings to the table in the form of sales and profits?

How many of you lose sleep at night due to having poor teams? How about those of you that hire off the street? How often do you chase down people that will stick around longer than their lunch break?

Ok, you get the point. Your team and the people you surround yourself with can make or break your business. They can provide tons of value or they can destroy a business and a business owner’s dreams.

Many a business has gone under due to not figuring out this people part of the puzzle of success.

During our time together we will spend time discussing how you can take your team to the highest levels. We will discuss four core concepts – hiring the best, training the best, team from a liability to an asset. Your greatest asset.

So today’s homework is for you to spend some time looking in the mirror and analyzing your team. What are your teams strengths? What are their weaknesses? What do you see as your biggest opportunities? How can you leverage the strengths you have?

A great example of this is, if your team has a great sense of humor and get along really well, how can you create some fun things into your business to let this play to your clients?  You see this in some business where they sing, they chant, just general silly, fun stuff.

Now I’m not saying you all need to sing. But what could you do that is appropriate for your business? By the way, let your team be part of the brainstorming. If they come up with the idea and you have the veto power, the odds are they will run with it.

Do you have a mascot? Can you create one? Teams with lots of pep love to be a mascot for the day for example.  That is just a silly example, but more to get your creative juices going.

Ok, so do your homework, analyze your team and start thinking about how you can take your greatest asset to new heights. In future episodes we will continue to dive into ways to help you. Plus, I really want to create some tools over on the main TrainingForLocalSmallBusinessOwners.com website to help you.

But, my main goal is to get you what you want. So please make sure that you are tossing out there what your needs are so I can focus on the right tools and resources. Remember, you will help direct the attention on the stuff that most of you are requesting.
