While there are a few factors, one of the biggest shifts I've made is in my outlook. In today's episode, I talk about what I've done to ensure I have a successful year.

Welcome back to the Local Small Business Coach Podcast. I am your coach, Tammy Adams.

Today we are going to take a look at How a Positive Attitude Plus Action Equals Great Results!

 

Hey everybody it is Tammy and it is time for another question Friday. Now I thought I would do something a little bit different this week and answer a question I am being asked on a regular basis lately.

One of the challenges that I personally took on in 2017 is to ensure that my mindset was always positive. I think I even talked about this on one of our success Saturday episodes. Last year I noticed that when I would get pulled into a negative situation my business would start to slide a little bit.  As Zig Ziglar would say, that “Stinkin Thinkin”.  Stinkin Thinkin will pull you down into negativity.

 

Those that know me, know I consider myself a very positive person, so it was weird that I would fall into these negative thinking roadblocks. But what would happen is, I would let other people’s negativity slip into my head. I would get caught up in what I didn’t have versus what I did have. You could say, I was not appreciating the business that I had and only on the business I didn’t have.

Thus causing my business not to grow because I was capping it with my own thinking!

 

My New Positive Outlook

So I made a decision at the tail end of 2016 of telling myself that in 2017 whenever I felt a negative thought, my goal would be to turn around and focus on what I was grateful for and be more appreciative of all of the business that I was getting.

Here’s the funny thing, ever since I changed my attitude to a more winning positive attitude my business has skyrocketed. I have probably had the busiest January I’ve ever had. I do believe that because my thoughts have all been positive it just continues to snowball my success. I have had deals that show up that I never should have had or probably would have had in the past. It’s kind of like being open to receiving it and then is coming in droves. Now I don't tell you this to brag I tell you this to share my experience.

Now how did this end up as a question on Friday? Well here’s what happened. Ever since I have been so busy all the other agents who have not been busy have been asking me where am I getting my business from? Why am I so busy when they aren’t?  Sure they are starting to pick up but mine has been strong and crazy all month.

My honest answer is, I think it's a combination of things.

 

The Holiday's Hurt Your Strong Start

Way too often I see the holidays start to roll around in mid-November and people start to button up their business. They automatically slow down in the holiday season, thinking I’m going to take extra time off to spend time with my family.  Now please don’t misunderstand me, I am not saying, don’t spend quality time with your family. I am not telling you not to enjoy the holidays. That is not the point of my message. Just know that if you're going to do this, then know that you are going to have a slow start to the year because you haven’t been building your business for the new year

In my real estate world, many agents take time off since it slows down. I work in December because the competition is lower and I recognize that I’m in a business that is about being 30,60, & 90 days out.  Since others turn on the brakes, come January they wonder why they don’t have any business. They spend January trying to ramp up.

So part one of the answer I have to the question of starting the year off strong in a service based business is that you must be cultivating the next 30 60 90 days worth of business. So if you’re an agent or you’re in some other field with a similar cultivating process, I want this to be a huge take away for everybody.

If you really want to start off the year with a bang then you really must make sure that you have a plan in place to cultivate and build your business during the holiday season. Plus, think about it, if someone is out looking for your services during the holiday months, nine times out of ten, these are serious buyers, serious users of your business because when everybody else is distracted they want to do whatever it is that you do. Take advantage of this. Even if they’re not ready at that moment, when they are ready at the beginning of the year they will call you since you took the time when no one else would.

Remember people use the beginning of the year as their go-to time so when they’re ready to pull the trigger you want to be top-of-mind

 

How a Positive Outlook Has Helped

The second reason that I feel my business has taken off has been due to this positive attitude that I was talking about earlier. You are open to success when you are telling yourself that this is going to be one hell of a year. You want every thought that you have to be positive and you want to have a can do attitude. You will be amazed at what business comes your way.

Now, I mentioned that I have been talking to others about this positive can do attitude. I challenge them to get on the positivity train with me. What has been exciting is to watch them dive in change their mental attitude. Plus you would be shocked to hear how their business has taken off.

Here is the problem most of us have. When we focus on all that we don’t have, all we keep getting is more of what we don’t want. When you keep saying business sucks, guess what? Business is going to continue just suck. If you say your phone’s not ringing, nobody’s calling, your website sucks, excuse after excuse, reason after reason then guess what? the energy that you’re putting out is telling the world you don’t want that business.

Don’t get me wrong it is more than just putting out the positive energy. You also must be willing to take the steps you need to.  You need to back your can do attitude with the necessary actions to make it happen. It might be by putting the right advertising out there, it might by building your Word of Mouth. It might be contacting and touching base with your past clients. The key is, you must take action behind the positive thoughts.

 

You Must Take Action!

Too many people promised to be more positive yet they never take the action to propel themselves forward. You must combine the attitude with a gameplan. You have to commit to yourself that you will not get distracted from the plan, that you will not quit the first time something bad happens.

One of the folks that I’ve been working with on this new attitude pretty much gave up most of last year. Occasionally she was working part time if she worked at all. This year she committed not only have positivity going on, but to take the action as well. She is doing open houses three days a week, she committed to go to work and work on her business on a regular basis. She committed to telling her family that these would be the hours that she would be working. And guess what? She has had more business in the first 30 days of this year from committing herself and being positive then she had all of last year. It comes down to doing the right actions with the right attitude.

Don’t forget, It is also about telling our family and friends that we will not accept their negativity into our life. It will not ruin these relationships, if anything you might even inspire them. While, they might not understand or believe you in the beginning, they will start to buy in when they start seeing the good things happening. They will see the difference it’s making in your life and they will start to wonder if it’ll make a difference in theirs.

Now I want to reach out and ask you a question? When you look back at the beginning of this year, is your business taking off the way you want it to? I have had conversations with local small business owners that are already giving up on the rest of the year saying that it is already a bust. That business is not strong and that things are not going well.

The problem goes back to their attitude. It goes back to not putting things in place. It goes back to they didn’t do anything in December to drive their business so why can they be shocked it didn’t start off well?

So my question to you is, do you have a positive attitude, do you believe this is going to be the best year ever for you and your business? Are you taking the action steps needed to drive your business? You will be amazed at how ideas pour out of you when you attack it from this positive place in your heart and in your mind.

 

How is the Year Starting for You?

I want to challenge each and every one of you to look back at the start of this year and ask yourself are you starting off with a bang? If you’re not, then it is really critical that you step back and ask yourself why isn’t it? Is due to a poor attitude? Is it due to a lack of action? The lack of preparing for the beginning of the year?

If you are having a great year, a great attitude full of action. Awesome. Congratulations!

But if your year sucks, you need to stop right now saying that this is a crappy year. You need to believe that this year is still going to be a fantastic year for you. By the way if you’re listening to this in the future or maybe you are listening to it halfway through 2017, heck maybe you’re listening to it in 2018 or later, it doesn’t matter. You need to start today with these skills. You need to look in the mirror and ask yourself why are you being negative and how do you flip it around and replace those negative thoughts.

When something bad happens, you need to be grateful. Now that sounds weird but you know bad things are always going to happen. That’s life and people need to get over it. When on Earth in your life have you ever not had negative things happen?

 

How Gratitude Helped Me Recently

I’m going to give you an example last week my water heater broke and I remember when I took the door off and I’m looking at the water heater and I’m seeing the water pour out the bottom of this water heater at that moment I could have been very upset about the price to replace it. I was wondering where the money was going to come from. All the stuff that naturally runs through our head. But I caught myself and I stopped and I said you know what I am grateful that this did not flood my house. I am grateful it did not soak my walls and cause mold. I was grateful for the fact that I caught it in time. And in that moment I had a calmness and realized everything was going to be okay. Was it painful? Yes. But it could have been ten times worse.  I could have said that 2017 was already starting off crappy because of this water heater. But I didn't and I challenge each of you to do the same thing.

Okay I am going to end this question Friday. I know it was a little bit different but I promise you it is a question I have been answering repeatedly multiple times a week from different people wondering what is going on. Wondering how they can take their business to the next level. How they can really make a difference this year versus last year. I’m telling you the biggest single thing that they have to change to start making a difference in their business is the attitude that they come with it and the action steps they are taking to make it happen.
