Do you have a talent for fixing things up around your house and you are thinking “Maybe I could fix things around other people's houses and make some money”? Then maybe starting a handyman business is right for you. There is a lot of opportunity and lots of ways to make a future as a handyman starting your own handyman business.

Step 1: Solidify Your Concept to Start Your Handyman Business

There are many things to think about when planning your handyman business. To begin with you should think about the following:

Will you be part time or full time? Will you be your town's go-to handyman or will you be open to traveling further distances? What services will you provide? Do you have the resources to start the business such as tools, a work truck, availability, etc.?

What will you call your business? Remember, a catchy name can go a long way!

Step 2: Do the Prep Work

Painting is easy. The hard part is taping up all of the edges, corners and crevices. This goes for business too. The prep work is essential for running a small business to ensure success.

To start a handyman business, you will first need to get a business license, insurance, and possibly other certifications. Check with your local township for details on the requirements.

You should also compare pricing of other businesses who provide similar services to make sure you are staying competitive. You will also be considered an independent contractor so you will want to consult with an accountant for details about how much you will owe Uncle Sam.

Learn how to keep track of your income and expenses through various software programs or something as simple as an excel spreadsheet. And keep all of your receipts!

Step 3: How Will You Get Business

You could have the best business model in the world but it won't mean anything if you don't have a way to reach people. The good news is that you can market with little money.

You can put flyers on doors, hand out business cards, network, reach out to friends and family get yourself on social media, or connect with other professionals such as real estate agents who may send your referrals.

However, the best way to grow your business is to provide top notch customer service and high quality work so your customers will refer you to their friends.

Step 4: Sink or Swim

If you are making your handyman small business your full time job you will be dependent on it making you an income. You will need to put in hard work to make sure you will sustain yourself.

One tip is: Don't get lazy. Set yourself on a detailed schedule. Wake up early each morning and dedicate a few hours to marketing, planning, setting appointments, and be sure you answer your phone when it rings.

Step 5: Jump Right In

There's no better time to start on this venture then RIGHT NOW. The clock is ticking. If you have decided to pursue this then get started right away building that solid foundation and build on it.

Eventually you may even hire your own employees and dedicate less time to fixing things and more time to counting money. Owning a small business is an aggressive and proactive move so be ready because you will only get out of it what you put into it.
